Dr. John C. (Jack) Lude passed away on May 11, 2016 at the age of 80. Dr. Lude's tenure at Ohio State spanned 30 years, and he has been member of Cleft Team at Nationwide Children's Hospital for 45 years. Most of our OSU Ortho alums in practice today have trained under Dr. Lude, and he will be missed both in the Orthodontic Department as well as at Children's Hospital. Dr. Lude's Children's Hospital colleague, Dr. Ana Mercado wrote the following memorial:
It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you that Dr. Jack Lude passed away last evening, surrounded by his family at the Ross Heart Hospital. He recently celebrated his 80th birthday, with 30 years of loyal dedication to teaching at OSU College of Dentistry in the Division of Orthodontics. In his role at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, he taught pediatric dentistry residents and orthodontic residents. He shared his passion for cleft and craniofacial care with numerous students, faculty, and visitors. Most importantly, he was loved by families for his compassion and dedication to the kids, many of whom were neonates when they first met Dr. Lude and then those same patients grew with Dr. Lude to complete surgical-orthodontic care in the their late teenage years. He advocated for those families who came year after year for their cleft evaluations at Children’s, which gave the families a sense of continuity from a sweet doctor who was an expert in the field. They saw in Dr. Lude a true family friend. I never felt bad when the families asked to see good-old-Dr. Lude instead of me. He meant a lot to them. There’s no doubt that he will be missed.
I was blessed to have him as a mentor, friend, and a source of inspiration. May God bless Dr. Lude’s soul and bring comfort to his family.
